Prophets: Hosea 1:1 – 2:23

The book of Hosea is almost exclusively about the falling away of Ephraim (Northern tribes of Israel) and also about their redemption. It is beautifully played out to show YHVH’s everlasting love for His covenant people and verses from Hosea are reiterated many times in other books of the bible. The name ‘Hosea’ also means salvation showing YHVW’s purpose of someday calling Ephraim back to covenant relationship and the land of Israel. Here, Hosea is told to take a wife of harlotry portraying Ephraim’s harlotry toward YHWH.

Hos 1:1  The word of יהוה that came to Hoshĕa son of Be’ĕri, in the days of Uzziyah, Yotham, Aḥaz, and Ḥizqiyah, sovereigns of Yehuḏah, and in the days of Yaroḇʽam son of Yo’ash, sovereign of Yisra’ĕl.

Hos 1:2  The beginning of the word of יהוה with Hoshĕa. And יהוה said to Hoshĕa, “Go, take yourself a woman of whoring and children of whoring, for the land has utterly whored away from יהוה.”

Hos 1:3  So he went and took Gomer, daughter of Diḇlayim, and she conceived and bore him a son.

Hos 1:4  And יהוה said to him, “Call his name Yizreʽĕl, for in a little while I shall revenge the bloodshed of Yizreʽĕl on the house of Yĕhu, and put an end to the reign of the house of Yisra’ĕl.

Jezreel means Elohim will sow or plant

Hos 1:5  “And it shall be in that day that I shall break the bow of Yisra’ĕl in the Valley of Yizreʽĕl.”

Hos 1:6  And she conceived again and bore a daughter. And He said to him, “Call her name Lo-Ruḥamah, for no longer do I have compassion on the house of Yisra’ĕl so as to forgive them at all.

Lo Ruchama means no mercy

Hos 1:7  “But I shall have compassion on the house of Yehuḏah and save them by יהוה their Elohim, and not save them by bow or by sword or battle, by horses or horsemen.”

Hos 1:8  And she weaned Lo-Ruḥamah, and conceived and bore a son,

Hos 1:9  then He said, “Call his name Lo-Ammi, for you are not My people, and I am not for you.

Lo Amee means not my people

Hos 1:10  “Yet the number of the children of Yisra’ĕl shall be as the sand of the sea, which is not measured nor counted. And it shall be in the place where it was said to them, ‘You are not My people,’ they shall be called, ‘You are the sons of the living Ěl.’

Hos 1:11  “And the children of Yehuḏah and the children of Yisra’ĕl shall be gathered together, and appoint for themselves one head, and shall come up out of the earth, for great is the day of Yizreʽĕl!

Hos 2:1  “Say to your brothers, ‘O my people,’ and to your sisters, ‘O, compassioned one.’

Hos 2:2  “Strive with your mother, strive, for she is not My wife, nor am I her Husband! Let her put away her whorings from her face, and her adulteries from between her breasts,

Hos 2:3  lest I strip her naked, and shall set her up as on the day she was born, and shall make her like a wilderness, and shall set her like a dry land, and shall put her to death with thirst.

Hos 2:4  “And I shall not have compassion on her children, for they are the children of whorings.

Hos 2:5  “For their mother has whored, she who conceived them has acted shamelessly. For she said, ‘I go after my lovers, who give me my bread and my water, my wool and my linen, my oil and my drink.’

Hos 2:6  “Therefore, see, I am hedging up your way with thorns, and I shall wall her in, so that she does not find her paths.

Hos 2:7  “And she shall pursue her lovers but not overtake them, and shall seek them but not find them. Then she shall say, ‘Let me go and return to my first husband, for then it was better for me than now.’

Hos 2:8  “And she did not acknowledge that I gave her grain, and new wine, and oil, and increased her silver and gold which they prepared for Baʽal.

Hos 2:9  “Therefore I shall turn back and shall take my grain in its time and My new wine in its season, and I shall take away My wool and My linen covering her nakedness.

Verses 1-9 are showing Israel’s unfaithfulness to YHWH and since she did not recognize the blessings that were given to her by Elohim He would remove them from her.

Hos 2:10  “And now I shall uncover her shame before the eyes of her lovers, and no one shall deliver her from My hand.

Hos 2:11  “And I shall cause all her rejoicing, her festivals, her New Moons, and her Sabbaths, even all her appointed times, to cease,

Because of our ancestors lack of obedience we have ceased to celebrate all of the Moedeem of YHWH. Only recently has restoration with the Heavenly Father began to bring us back into a covenant relationship with him through our obedience to his instructions found in the Torah.

Hos 2:12  and lay waste her vines and her fig trees, of which she has said, ‘these are my rewards that my lovers have given me.’ And I shall make them a forest, and the beasts of the field shall eat them.

Hos 2:13  “And I shall punish her for the days of the Baʽals to which she burned incense and adorned herself with her rings and jewelry, and went after her lovers, and forgot Me,” declares יהוה.

Hos 2:14  “Therefore, see, I am alluring her, and shall lead her into the wilderness, and shall speak to her heart,

Hos 2:15  and give to her vineyards from there, and the Valley of Aḵor as a door of expectation. And there she shall respond as in the days of her youth, as in the day when she came up from the land of Mitsrayim.

“Valley of Achor” is the valley of trouble where Achan died (Jos 7:26).

Hos 2:16  “And it shall be, in that day,” declares יהוה, “that you call Me ‘My Husband,’ and no longer call Me ‘My Baʽal.’

The Hebrew word Baal can mean husband (Jer 31:32), but most times means lord or master. It is interesting to note that many people today call Elohim ‘Lord’ instead of His true personal name of YHWH.

Hos 2:17  “And I shall remove the names of the Baʽals from her mouth, and they shall no more be remembered by their name.

Hos 2:18  “And in that day I shall make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the birds of the heavens, and with the creeping creatures of the ground, when bow, and sword, and battle I break from the earth. And I shall make them lie down in safety.

Hos 2:19  “And I shall take you as a bride unto Me forever, and take you as a bride unto Me in righteousness, and in right-ruling, and kindness and compassion.

Hos 2:20  “And I shall take you as a bride unto Me in trustworthiness, and you shall know יהוה.

Hos 2:21  “And it shall be in that day that I answer,” declares יהוה, “that I answer the heavens, and they answer the earth,

Hos 2:22  and the earth answer the grain and the new wine and the oil, and they answer Yizreʽĕl.

Hos 2:23  “And I shall sow her for Myself in the earth, and I shall have compassion on her who had not obtained compassion. And I shall say to those who were not My people, ‘You are My people,’ while they say, ‘My Elohim!’ ”

In the end time YHWH will redeem Israel and sow her in fertile soil where she will be blessed for her repentance in that day. As covenant believers, we to are included in this as we are either natural born or grafted in.

Brit Hadasha: Luke 2:1-7

Luk 2:1  And it came to be in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus for all the world to be registered.

Luk 2:2  This took place as a first registration while Quirinius was governing Syria.

Luk 2:3  And all were going to be registered, each one to his own city.

Luk 2:4  And Yosĕph also went up from Galil, out of the city of Natsareth to Yehuḏah, to the city of Dawiḏ, which is called Bĕyth Leḥem, because he was of the house and lineage of Dawiḏ,

Luk 2:5  to be registered with Miryam, who was engaged to him – being pregnant.

Luk 2:6  And it came to be, that while they were there, the days were filled for her to give birth.

Luk 2:7  And she gave birth to her first-born Son, and wrapped Him up, and laid Him down in a feeding trough, because there was no room for them in a lodging place.

A manger is a feeding trough cut out of stone and looked like a Jewish burial place. In the Jewish custom the dead person is also wrapped in burial clothes. When Luke states that Yahshua was wrapped in swaddling clothes and laid in a manger he is telling us that He was born to die. Tradition states Yahshua was born in a cave which would also parallel the same setting as when He died and was placed in a tomb in a cave.

Luke 16:1 – 17:10

Luk 16:1  And He also said to His taught ones, “There was a certain rich man who had a manager and he was accused to him as wasting his possessions.

Luk 16:2  “So having called him he said to him, ‘What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your management, for you are no longer able to be manager.’

Luk 16:3  “And the manager said within himself, ‘What shall I do? For my master is taking the managership away from me. I am unable to dig, I am ashamed to beg.

Luk 16:4  ‘I know what I shall do, that, when I am removed from the managership, they might receive me into their houses.’

Luk 16:5  “And calling every one of his master’s debtors to him, he said to the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’

Luk 16:6  “And he said, ‘A hundred measures of oil.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and sit down quickly and write fifty.’

Luk 16:7  “Then to another he said, ‘And how much do you owe?’ And he said, ‘A hundred measures of wheat.’ And he said to him, ‘Take your bill, and write eighty.’

Luk 16:8  “And the master praised the unrighteous manager because he had acted shrewdly, because the sons of this age are more shrewd in their generation than the sons of light.

Luk 16:9  “And would I say to you, make friends for yourselves by unrighteous mammon, that when you fail, they shall receive you into everlasting dwellings?

Luk 16:10  “He who is trustworthy in what is least, is trustworthy also in much. And he who is unrighteous in what is least is unrighteous also in much.

Luk 16:11  “If, therefore, you have not been trustworthy in the unrighteous mammon, who shall entrust to you the true?

Luk 16:12  “And if you have not been trustworthy in what is another man’s, who shall give you what is your own?

Luk 16:13  “No servant is able to serve two masters, for either he shall hate the one and love the other, or else he shall cling to the one and despise the other. You are not able to serve Elohim and mammon.”

Luk 16:14  And the Pharisees, who loved silver, also heard all this, and were sneering at Him,

Luk 16:15  so He said to them, “You are those who declare yourselves righteous before men, but Elohim knows your hearts, because what is highly thought of among men is an abomination in the sight of Elohim.

Luk 16:16  “The Torah and the prophets are until Yoḥanan. Since then the reign of Elohim is being announced, and everyone is doing violence upon it.

Luk 16:17  “And it is easier for the heaven and the earth to pass away than for one tittle of the Torah to fall.

Luk 16:18  “Everyone putting away his wife and marrying another commits adultery. And everyone marrying her who is put away from her husband commits adultery.

Luk 16:19  “But there was a certain rich man who used to dress in purple and fine linen and lived luxuriously every day.

Luk 16:20  “And there was a certain beggar named Elʽazar, being covered with sores, who was placed at his gate,

Luk 16:21  and longing to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table. Indeed, even the dogs came and licked his sores.

Luk 16:22  “And it came to be that the beggar died, and was carried by the messengers to the bosom of Aḇraham. And the rich man also died and was buried.

Luk 16:23  “And while suffering tortures in the grave, having lifted up his eyes, he saw Aḇraham far away, and Elʽazar in his bosom.

Luk 16:24  “And crying out he said, ‘Father Aḇraham, have compassion on me, and send Elʽazar to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am suffering in this flame.’

Luk 16:25  “But Aḇraham said, ‘Son, remember that in your life you received your good, and likewise Elʽazar the evil, but now he is comforted and you are suffering.

Luk 16:26  ‘And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set, so that those who wish to pass from here to you are unable, nor do those from there pass to us.’

Luk 16:27  “And he said, ‘Then I beg you, father, that you would send him to my father’s house,

Luk 16:28  for I have five brothers, let him warn them, lest they also come to this place of torture.’

Luk 16:29  “Aḇraham said to him, ‘They have Mosheh and the prophets, let them hear them.’

Luk 16:30  “And he said, ‘No, father Aḇraham, but if someone from the dead goes to them, they shall repent.’

Luk 16:31  “But he said to him, ‘If they do not hear Mosheh and the prophets, neither would they be persuaded even if one should rise from the dead.’ ”

Luk 17:1  And He said to the taught ones, “It is inevitable that stumbling-blocks should come, but woe to him through whom they come!

Luk 17:2  “It would be better for him if a millstone is put around his neck, and he were thrown into the sea, than that he should cause one of these little ones to stumble.

Luk 17:3  “Take heed to yourselves. If your brother sins against you, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him.

Luk 17:4  “And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and seven times in a day comes back to you, saying, ‘I repent,’ you shall forgive him.”

Luk 17:5  And the emissaries said to the Master, “Give us more belief.”

Luk 17:6  And the Master said, “If you have belief as a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be pulled up by the roots and be planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.

Luk 17:7  “But who of you, having a servant ploughing or shepherding, would say to him when he has come in from the field, ‘Come immediately and sit down to eat’?

Luk 17:8  “But would he not rather say to him, ‘Prepare somewhat for my supper, and gird yourself and serve me while I eat and drink, and afterward you shall eat and drink’?

Luk 17:9  “Would he thank that servant because he did what he was commanded? I think not.

Luk 17:10  “So also you, when you have done all that you were commanded, say, ‘We are unworthy servants, we have done what was our duty to do.’ ”

1 Corinthians 12:12-31

1Co 12:12  For as the body is one and has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is the Messiah.

1Co 12:13  For indeed by one Spirit we were all immersed into one body, whether Yehuḏim or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink into one Spirit.

1Co 12:14  For indeed the body is not one member but many.

1Co 12:15  If the foot says, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” does it therefore not belong to the body?

1Co 12:16  And if the ear says, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” does it therefore not belong to the body?

1Co 12:17  If all the body was an eye, where would be the hearing? If all hearing, where would be the smelling?

1Co 12:18  But now Elohim has set the members, each one of them, in the body, even as He pleased.

1Co 12:19  And if they all had been one member, where would the body be?

1Co 12:20  And now, there are indeed many members, but one body.

1Co 12:21  And an eye is unable to say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” or again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.”

1Co 12:22  But much rather, those members of the body which are thought to be weaker are necessary.

1Co 12:23  And to those of the body which we think to be less respected, these we present greater respect. And our unseemly members have greater seemliness,

1Co 12:24  whereas our seemly members have no need. But Elohim blended together the body, having given greater respect to that member which lacks it,

1Co 12:25  that there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same concern one for another.

1Co 12:26  And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is esteemed, all the members rejoice with it.

1Co 12:27  And you are a body of Messiah, and members individually.

1Co 12:28  And Elohim has appointed these in the assembly: firstly emissaries, secondly prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, ministrations, kinds of tongues.

1Co 12:29  Are all emissaries? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles?

1Co 12:30  Do all have gifts of healings? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret?

1Co 12:31  But earnestly seek the better gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way.

Some falsely put the gifts of speaking in another language as a litmus test to whether one has received the Holy Spirit or not, but clearly here we can see that not all members will receive this gift.

Num 6:22  And יהוה spoke to Mosheh, saying,

Num 6:23  “Speak to Aharon and his sons, saying, ‘This is how you bless the children of Yisra’ĕl. Say to them:

Num 6:24  “יהוה bless you and guard you;

Num 6:25  יהוה make His face shine upon you, and show favour to you;

Num 6:26  יהוה lift up His face upon you, and give you peace.” ’

Num 6:27  “Thus they shall put My Name on the children of Yisra’ĕl, and I Myself shall bless them.”
